Whatcom Middle Schoolers Harvest Good Vibes in the Midst of a Tragedy

Written by: Margot Lewis, 6th grader at Whatcom Middle School

On Thursday, November 5th my school, Whatcom Middle School, burned down.  It was a surprise and a shock.  I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself – and here were all these able- bodied 6th graders with time on their hands.  Encouraged by my parents, I decided to take action.  I called the Whatcom Volunteer Center and, thanks to Randi, had a list of people and places to call. Mike from the Food Bank called back first.  He told me to call Amaris, Manager of the Food Bank Farm.  (Meanwhile, I had been recruiting some other sixth graders.) Amaris called me back saying that it would be great if we came to help out.  So on Monday we loaded into the car…myself, four friends and my mom, and headed off.

First we harvested cauliflower, some bigger than my head!!!!!  Then we went into the greenhouses to tear down old, moldy tomato plants. (It was actually quite satisfying!)  Talk, clip, pull, talk, clip, pull was our rhythm as we worked down the rows.  After, we hauled an assortment of vegetables to the Food Bank.  It was so nice to know that we were helping out.  Thank you so much to Amaris, Randi, Mike, the other people who also called back after Mike about other service projects, my parents, and my friends, Sophia, Jeanette, Ben and Nathaniel.

I greatly admire what you chose too do for the community. It’s nice to know that some people in these younger generations are still willing to help others. Good job, and im sorry about your school.
