Come Learn with Us! 2010

Whatcom Volunteer Center offers workshops to benefit volunteers as well as organizations that work with volunteers. Please register in advance for these training opportunities. To register or for more information, call us at 734-3055. Unless otherwise noted, trainings are held at the Whatcom Volunteer Center at 725 North State Street in Bellingham and scheduled dates are in 2010.

Registration opens one month prior to the workshop date. A limited number of scholarships may be available for some workshops.

Take the Reins! Volunteers Leading Projects Are you a volunteer that wishes to take on projects for your organization? Organize it so that the work gets done, volunteers feel positive about the work they do, and you preserve your sanity. Big, little, and in-between projects, there are tips that will save you time and frustration.Take the Reins! is limited to 12 people and requires pre-registration. No fee. Keep the Best – Recruit and Recognize Volunteers Learn how to make your volunteers feel valued, honored, and appreciated. Starting from recruitment and continuing through everyday recognition and into special events, learn how to maximize the volunteer experience.
Keep the Best is limited to 12 people and requires pre-registration. $20 fee.

Volunteer: Save A Life First Aid and CPR training for active volunteers.Registration opens February 20 and is required. No fee, but $10 deposit is required and will be returned at the class. At Red Cross: 2111 King St. Bring your lunch.

On Board Training Our nonprofit partners consistently identify finding and retaining board members with the appropriate skills, interest, and passion for nonprofit service as a crucial need. On Board gives an introduction for volunteers to the basics of board service. We’ll explore:

  • What is a nonprofit?
  • How are they organized?
  • What are the roles and responsibilities of Board Members?
  • What is the personal liability for Board Members?
  • How do you choose a likely organization to serve with?

On Board is limited to 12 people and requires pre-registration. No fee.

Motivational Management in Working with Volunteers If you want to energize your volunteers, grow as a leader, and get your volunteer programs running smoother—this class is for you!You will learn:

  • To create a positive culture and work environment
  • To gain support and cooperation from your volunteers
  • How behavioral styles affect communication
  • The important link between positive leadership and the health of your mission

All managers of large or small organizations, teams, and groups of any kind will benefit from this fast-paced, interactive, and fun class! Bring the whole group. $20 fee.

Interns: What to Expect Join us for a conversation with different representatives of high school and college-level internship programs. Learn what to expect and what is expected of internship sponsors. Tap into the energy and idealism of youth! $10 fee. Tuesday, May 4, 10 – 11:30 AM
Creating Projects for Groups of Volunteers Learn the keys to work with groups of volunteers to accomplish projects on a one-time or ongoing basis. Discover how to utilize your group’s efforts effectively. This workshop is appropriate for nonprofits that wish to work with groups and for group leaders who wish to create meaningful service opportunities for groups such as service clubs, families, church youth groups, or school groups. $15 fee. Delegation Skills for Volunteer Managers Learning to turn over responsibility to volunteers is key to getting work done, showing your volunteers you trust them, and freeing staff for other work. It doesn’t come easy, but you can do it. $20 fee. Tuesday, September 21, 10 AM – 2 PM
Volunteer Management 101 Learn to build an effective volunteer program for your organization. This two-day workshop will help you learn to recruit, retain, and recognize volunteers who want to help your organization achieve your goals. Examine other volunteer programs’ effective practices and get your own program off to a great start.$100 fee includes lunch. People with special dietary needs should bring a sack lunch. Thursday & Friday, November 4 & 5,
