Have your awards event and eat ice cream too!

I think that one of the best things we do every year, not counting the fundraising events like Human Race, the free CPR/First Aid classes and the matching of volunteers with partner agencies, is the Heart & Hands Awards Ice Cream Social. Read the rest of this entry »

Lessons from a Year at WVC

This is farewell and a big, giant, virtual hug to thank you.

For one year, I have been an Americorps VISTA for Whatcom Volunteer Center, and this is my last week. I can’t believe I squeezed it all into one year: Human Race, Make A Difference Day, Heart and Hands, Project Homeless Connect, thousands of emails, hundreds of phone calls, countless hours on Pandora radio, and invaluable relationships throughout the county.

For all of those experiences, I thank you all.

I have learned so much: Read the rest of this entry »

Project Warm-Up Warming Hearts

How many hours would it take you to knit or crochet more than 3,200 pieces of warm items?

3,296 scarves, hats, blankets, mittens to be exact: this is a result of piles and piles of yarn in our entranceway, monthly knitting circles all year long, people coming in and out of our office taking yarn and bringing it back in a finished project. Project Warm-Up is a program run out of our office that collects handmade items to distribute to homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, programs for parents that have a low-income, people with disabilities, and people with health issues. One in three kids in Whatcom County will fail to graduate from high school.  I hope you agree with me that even one high school dropout is a real problem: one we can solve together. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s All the Buzz About!?

The WVC offices have been abuzz with activity for the past few weeks–Project Homeless Connect is this Thursday; we’re getting the word out about the free CPR/First aid Training on March 20, our Theatre Guild fundraiser happening April 8, the Heart and Hands volunteer awards event coming up the last Sunday in April and the Human Race kickoff on April 20-22. The buzz is from the activity of the many volunteers that make up a large part of the organizing teams. Read the rest of this entry »

Volunteering: Selfless AND Selfish?

Written by: Garrett Osborne, WWU Communications 318 Student

Volunteerism is a selfless, sacrificial act…at least that’s what everyone thinks. But let’s be honest, it can benefit the volunteer almost equally, or more. Think about it: volunteering is a way to meet new people, network amongst nonprofits, get class credit, build your resume, gain experience, get personal satisfaction, and stroke your ego a little bit. Amongst all of these secret motivations to volunteer, you know that someone else benefits from the time & energy you put in. Read the rest of this entry »

Nonprofits to Know #2: Northwest Youth Services

Amongst all the conversations about health care, social security and voting for school funding, at the heart of what we are discussing is the legacy we are leaving for today’s youth. In the spirit of creating opportunity for youth locally, we have Northwest Youth Services (NWYS), whose heart and energy is completely invested in the youth of our community.

Why Do You Want to Volunteer at Project Homeless Connect?

100 people sitting in a room, facing a projector screen, and still we decide to go around the room and introduce every person, one-by-one. A sigh and a passing thought of how much time this is going to take, until the comments people have are so riveting, the time flies and I want more. A Trip to WVC is “Well Worth the Time!”

Written By: Lacey Kara, WWU Service-Learning student

Despite volunteering for local non-profit organizations, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Bellingham Parks and Recreation through Whatcom Volunteer Center, and frequently viewing their list of current volunteer opportunities, I’ve never been to their office.  Last week, I finally visited the WVC office, and discovered what else they have to offer.  Not only do they provide a place for volunteers and local non-profits seeking opportunities and assistance to be matched, but they have their own programs established in our community.  Three such programs include “Volunteer Chore Program,” “House 2 Home Network,” and “Project Warm-Up.” Read the rest of this entry »
