Nonprofits to Know #3: Communities In Schools
Posted by Randi in Blog, Events, Hot Opportunities on March 2nd, 2010
One in three kids in Whatcom County will fail to graduate from high school. I hope you agree with me that even one high school dropout is a real problem: one we can solve together. Read the rest of this entry »
All Volunteers are Winners
While watching the news coverage in anticipation of the start of the Winter Olympics, I suddenly realized how many volunteers it must take to put on an event of that magnitude. Being in the “volunteer business,” I don’t know why that was the first time I’d thought of that, but the realization just kind of washed over me at that moment. I thought about how valuable the volunteers are that help put on our events such as Make a Difference Day,Heart & Hands, and The Human Race and the work it takes to coordinate a large volunteer effort to make sure all volunteers have meaningful work to do and are recognized for their efforts. And, right now we are mobilizing our own army of volunteers for Project Homeless Connect, an event that helps people experiencing homelessness receive needed services to take their first steps out of the cycle of homelessness. Nonprofits to Know #2: Northwest Youth Services
Amongst all the conversations about health care, social security and voting for school funding, at the heart of what we are discussing is the legacy we are leaving for today’s youth. In the spirit of creating opportunity for youth locally, we have Northwest Youth Services (NWYS), whose heart and energy is completely invested in the youth of our community.
Why Do You Want to Volunteer at Project Homeless Connect?
100 people sitting in a room, facing a projector screen, and still we decide to go around the room and introduce every person, one-by-one. A sigh and a passing thought of how much time this is going to take, until the comments people have are so riveting, the time flies and I want more. Read the rest of this entry »
A Trip to WVC is “Well Worth the Time!”
Written By: Lacey Kara, WWU Service-Learning student
Despite volunteering for local non-profit organizations, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Bellingham Parks and Recreation through Whatcom Volunteer Center, and frequently viewing their list of current volunteer opportunities, I’ve never been to their office. Last week, I finally visited the WVC office, and discovered what else they have to offer. Not only do they provide a place for volunteers and local non-profits seeking opportunities and assistance to be matched, but they have their own programs established in our community. Three such programs include “Volunteer Chore Program,” “House 2 Home Network,” and “Project Warm-Up.” Read the rest of this entry »

How to Help Haiti
As we are all too aware, on Tuesday Haiti experienced an earthquake that caused devastation beyond what words and photos can convey. There is tremendous loss of life, catastrophic damage to most buildings affecting a third of the population, and dire need for food, water and medical care. Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti and their families and loved ones. Read the rest of this entry »

Step-by-Step: Getting Out of Homelessness
In October, I visited Tent City 4, currently on the grounds of a church in Kirkland. Over 90 people who otherwise would be homeless live there, moving from church to church every few months. They police themselves, perform community service and seek or work at jobs to save enough money to pay for permanent housing. There is a constant turnover as residents acquire jobs and savings enough to move out of tents into apartments.
There are no tent cities in Whatcom County, but Project Homeless Connect 2009 helped people who are homeless to get wait-listed on the spot for housing and one couple has already moved into subsidized housing. Others got haircuts, clothes and voice mail access, all critical needs for job seekers—if a prospective employer cannot contact you, how can he hire you? Many got overdue medical and dental checkups and care. Read the rest of this entry »
