“Is it so small a thing
To have enjoy’d the sun,
To have lived light in the spring,
To have loved, to have thought, to have done…”

Project Warm-Up Warming Hearts
Posted by Randi in Blog, Hot Opportunities on March 25th, 2010
How many hours would it take you to knit or crochet more than 3,200 pieces of warm items?
3,296 scarves, hats, blankets, mittens to be exact: this is a result of piles and piles of yarn in our entranceway, monthly knitting circles all year long, people coming in and out of our office taking yarn and bringing it back in a finished project. Project Warm-Up is a program run out of our office that collects handmade items to distribute to homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, programs for parents that have a low-income, people with disabilities, and people with health issues. Posted by Aly in Blog, Hot Opportunities on February 9th, 2010
About two weeks ago I volunteered with the Max Higbee Center for a “friendraiser” as they like to call them. I have had a growing interest in working with individuals with developmental disabilities, and this was a great opportunity. Initially I felt overwhelmed, Read the rest of this entry »
Why Do You Want to Volunteer at Project Homeless Connect?
100 people sitting in a room, facing a projector screen, and still we decide to go around the room and introduce every person, one-by-one. A sigh and a passing thought of how much time this is going to take, until the comments people have are so riveting, the time flies and I want more. Read the rest of this entry »
Nonprofits to Know #1: Bellingham Books to Prisoners
Posted by Randi in Blog, Hot Opportunities on January 28th, 2010
Bellingham Books to Prisoners, a pretty self-explanatory name for the nonprofit, but take a look behind the scenes and the mission goes much deeper. What it means? It is the power to provide someone with a simple item, a book, that can make a powerful and positive difference in that person’s life.

A Trip to WVC is “Well Worth the Time!”
Written By: Lacey Kara, WWU Service-Learning student
Despite volunteering for local non-profit organizations, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and Bellingham Parks and Recreation through Whatcom Volunteer Center, and frequently viewing their list of current volunteer opportunities, I’ve never been to their office. Last week, I finally visited the WVC office, and discovered what else they have to offer. Not only do they provide a place for volunteers and local non-profits seeking opportunities and assistance to be matched, but they have their own programs established in our community. Three such programs include “Volunteer Chore Program,” “House 2 Home Network,” and “Project Warm-Up.” Read the rest of this entry »

How to Help Haiti
As we are all too aware, on Tuesday Haiti experienced an earthquake that caused devastation beyond what words and photos can convey. There is tremendous loss of life, catastrophic damage to most buildings affecting a third of the population, and dire need for food, water and medical care. Our thoughts are with the people of Haiti and their families and loved ones. Read the rest of this entry »

Volunteering: Beneficial to the Volunteer too?
I participated on October 24, 2009 in the national Make A Difference Day. I chose to volunteer my time with the Arthritis Foundation. This year, we folded 3,700 Jingle Bell Run t-shirts. Jingle Bell Run is an annual Bellingham event that supports research and funding for the Arthritis Foundation. I was actually really grateful to have this opportunity to serve the needs of my community. Read the rest of this entry »
