Connection to an Invisible People

By Teresa Schmidt, Project Homeless Connect volunteer

I’d heard that Project Homeless Connect was a rewarding experience for volunteers. But I might have had a different motivation than many of the volunteers. You see, I didn’t expect that the day would expose me to a side of homelessness I hadn’t encountered. I know Bellingham has its share of homeless men, women and children of all age groups and from all sorts of backgrounds. I’ve walked past them on park benches, on Railroad Ave., on freeway exits. I knew they each had a life story behind them. Read the rest of this entry »

What Volunteering Has Meant to Me

Written by: Lacey Kara, Western Washington University student

I moved to Bellingham, WA from Boston, MA at the beginning of my sophomore year of high school. Not knowing anybody or having any other “niche,” I joined our high school’s volunteer organization called “Key Club.” I felt like I would be accepted here, if anywhere, and I would have the opportunity to meet new people while volunteering at various locations around Whatcom County, and the place I now call home. Ferndale Food Bank Director Retires – Thanks Sharon!

“My many years with the Food Bank have been an amazing journey filled with laughter, tears, faith & hope.  I have seen progression from our use of a small facility at the United Church to our own much larger building at the WTA Park & Ride location.  Yet, we continue to grow, and our hope for expansion is in the works.

I am so grateful for the incredible volunteers who give of their time and selves to help our families in need of food. We could not maintain our extremely busy operation without them.

My thanks go out as well to our sponsors and contributors. This community continues to not only step up, but run to the plate when needed.”

–Sincerely, Sharon Robinson

Sharon Robinson celebrated 18 years as Director of the Ferndale Food Bank in January of 2010, and is reluctantly retiring.  She has given 170 to 200 hours a month, every month, for all those years.  She really cares about the outcomes of the program, and works hard to make sure all program recipients are served in the best way possible for their needs. Service Learning…of course it helps!

Written By: Laura Draper

An article in the New York Times, by Stephanie Strom, talked about service learning, and if it really helps organizations. Being an intern myself, I thought of course it helps! We’re providing the help that local agencies need in the community. What I didn’t think of though, was that maybe there are schools that don’t have as much structure as mine when it comes to students doing service learning. Strom talked about a small down in Massachusetts where a local organization is overwhelmed with students that come in when class is in session asking what they can do to help. I can see how if a student were to come in without any direction, it could be overwhelming for an organization. Read the rest of this entry »

1 click = $1 from igive.com, Today & Tomorrow only!

We know that many causes have had a hard year, so we’d like to try something new to help Whatcom Volunteer Center that requires your participation, but is free and definitely easy.

iGive.com is going to attempt to donate $5,000 in just 24 hours to Whatcom Volunteer Center and other causes.
For each person who joins iGive using the special link below and does just one web search on our site between now and noon Thursday, we’ll give Whatcom Volunteer Center a dollar.
5,000 new members, $5,000.  No purchase necessary.
Of course, if they search more (or buy something) they’ll earn even more money for Whatcom Volunteer Center.
Right now, we’re donating $.02 per search and a bonus $5 for that first purchase plus the usual percentage.
Here’s where you come in.  The only way Whatcom Volunteer Center will get new supporters and that free $1 (or more) is if you invite them.  Send your friends, family, and colleagues the following link in an e-mail, tweet it, do a Facebook posting, put up posters, shout from mountain tops (you know the drill) and let them know you think Whatcom Volunteer Center is pretty cool and deserves their support, especially since it’s free!  You can even just forward this e-mail.
This is the link:
http://www.igive.com/welcome/warm_reg_promo.cfm?m=335617
We’re really proud of our search capability, powered by Yahoo!  We’ve made tons of improvements over the past four months, so we want lots of people to try it out and put it to the test.  If they keep on searching or shopping after testing us out, so much the better for Whatcom Volunteer Center and iGive.com.
The details:
- Offer active between now and 11:59 a.m., December 17, 2009 (Chicago time).
- New members only (never have been an iGive member previously).  All the normal rules of membership, searching, and
purchasing apply, our site has the details.
- Once we’ve given away $5,000, the offer ends.
That’s it.  Don’t forget to try our search yourself (http://isearch.igive.com).  You may need to login first.
From our families to yours, we hope you have a great holiday season.
Yours,
Robert N. Grosshandler
Founder
