- How do I volunteer?
To volunteer, fill out the Volunteer Sign-up Form (PDF) and email it to rebeccar@whatcomvolunteer.org or fax or email it to Whatcom Volunteer Center. You can also contact Rebecca Rayner or Dan Hammill at Whatcom Volunteer Center at 360.734.3055.
- How do I sign up to receive furniture?
To receive furniture, you must be referred by a case manager. At this time, we are only accepting customers from the Whatcom Homeless Service Center, its case managers and its partner agencies, but we hope to expand soon.
- I am a case manager. How can my client receive furniture?
At this time we are only accepting customers from the Whatcom Homeless Service Center, but we hope to expand soon. To enroll a customer, fill out the Furniture Request Form (PDF) and email it to rebeccar@whatcomvolunteer.org or fax or mail it to the Whatcom Volunteer Center
- How can I donate?
To donate, fill out the Furniture Donation Form (PDF) and email it to rebeccar@whatcomvolunteer.org or fax or mail it to Whatcom Volunteer Center.
- What can I donate?
Nearly any furniture or household item can be donated. Please do not donate items you would not want in your own home. For more information, see the What can and can’t I donate? section of this page. Remember, we will only take items customers have requested. Contact Rebecca Rayner at rebeccar@whatcomvolunteer.org or at 360.734.3055 to find out if your item is needed.
- I need to get rid of my couch (or other item) immediately. Can you take it?
We will pick up items based on customer need. If you want to donate an item and there is no current need, we can’t take it. If you are unable to hold onto it, we suggest you donate it to another organization.
- The volunteer didn’t show up to pick up my donated item. What do I do?
Please contact the Whatcom Volunteer Center if a volunteer does not keep a scheduled pick up appointment. We will reschedule for a new pick up as soon as possible.
- The volunteer didn’t show up to drop off my new furniture. What do I do?
Please contact the Whatcom Volunteer Center if a volunteer does not keep a scheduled drop off appointment. We will reschedule for a new drop off as soon as possible.
- The donor wasn’t home and didn’t leave the furniture in a pre-arranged place when I went to pick up their donation. What do I do?
If you arrive at a donor’s house and you are unable to pick up the furniture, contact the Whatcom Volunteer Center so we can try to contact them or reschedule, and so we can notify the customer of the change in plans.
- The customer wasn’t home when I went to drop the furniture off. What do I do?
Since the Whatcom Volunteer Center cannot store the item, the item must be dropped off at the client’s home even if they are not home. Please notify the Whatcom Volunteer Center so we can try to contact the customer.
- The customer got upset and said they didn’t want the furniture anymore when I arrived at their house. What do I do?
Contact the Whatcom Volunteer Center immediately and we will work with the customer or direct you to drop the item off at another organization, like the Goodwill.
- Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. Donors value their items and get a receipt from the Whatcom Volunteer Center.
- What are the benefits of getting involved with this program?
For donors, you will have a tax-deductible way to donate your furniture without having to move it yourself. For customers, you will receive furniture and household items that will make it easier to live your new home.
- Can I drop items off at the Whatcom Volunteer Center?
No. We will not store items at our office or in an off-site warehouse.
