Nonprofits to Know #2: Northwest Youth Services

Amongst all the conversations about health care, social security and voting for school funding, at the heart of what we are discussing is the legacy we are leaving for today’s youth. In the spirit of creating opportunity for youth locally, we have Northwest Youth Services (NWYS), whose heart and energy is completely invested in the youth of our community.

Based on the inspiring core values such as empowerment, strength-base approaches, family-based programs, diversity and power of change, NWYS’ mission and vision make me believe these are values that we could all benefit from subscribing to in all aspects of life. Daily, NWYS are creating powerful, confident youth and performing life-changing experiences: see this link for a first-hand account.

Their programs provide housing services for youth who are homeless. These programs include the Transitional Living Program and the Supportive Housing Program. They also have a group called Just Us, that meets for LGBTQQ teens and their allies, giving youth a voice and a safe space to hang out. And last, but definitely not least, Northwest Youth Services partners with Whatcom County Superior Courts to provide a real court hearing for youth who are second-time offenders. The trials in Teen Court are tried by a completely youth jury, advocates, bailiffs and judges dealing with real issues and reduces recidivism in youth.

The strength Northwest Youth Services gives to teens and children is irreplaceable in our community and completely inspiring. None of the change they create happens instantly, but one-by-one, they are introducing youth the tools they can use to make a better future for themselves. These are the future leaders of our community, after all.
