A Win-Win Situation

Written by a Whatcom Community College Student

An opportunity to volunteer in the Whatcom community AND earn extra credit – win win!

In order to participate, I signed up online (1-800-volunteer.org) for one of the few stations that still had volunteer openings, the Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

Here, by Nugent’s Corner, the 15 or so volunteers and I did grounds cleanup from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. I helped cut back blackberry vines that were encroaching on netted foul pens, cut down burdock thistles, cleaned out a woodshed and dug out an old satellite dish post. Meanwhile, other volunteers tackled: ousting a stump, fastening together a new bird cage, moving an animal kennel indoors and cutting grass.

The morning was beneficial because it exposed me to the organization and quality leadership of Whatcom volunteer activities. It allowed me to work alongside other volunteers from various backgrounds and with various motivations of participating and acquainted me with Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, which I didn’t know even existed.
